چکیده

We analyze STIS spectra in the 1150-1700 Å wavelength range obtained for six early B supergiants in the neighboring galaxy M31. Because of their likely high (nearly solar) abundance, these stars were originally chosen to be directly comparable to their Galactic counterparts, and represent a much-needed addition to our current sample of B-type supergiants, in our efforts to study the dependence of the Wind Momentum-Luminosity Relationship on spectral type and metallicity. As a first step to determine wind momenta we fit the P-Cygni profiles of the resonance lines of Nv, Si iv and C iv with standard methods, and derive terminal velocities for all of the STIS targets. From these lines we also derive ionic stellar wind column densities. Our results are compared with those obtained previously in Galactic supergiants, and confirm earlier claims of ‘normal’ wind line intensities and terminal velocities in M31. For half of the sample we find evidence for an enhanced maximum turbulent velocity when compared to Galactic counterparts. An analysis of STIS HST UV spectra of M33 early B supergiants

We present terminal velocities of M33 B-supergiants, obtained from STIS HST spectra as part of our programme to investigate the Wind Momentum – Luminosity Relationship (WLR) in the Local Group. Terminal velocities are derived from their N V, C IV, and Si IV resonance lines in UV spectra. Comparing with IUE spectra of Galactic B-supergiants we found evidence of low metallicity in three of our ob...

Chemical abundances and winds of massive stars in M31: a B-type supergiant and a WC star in OB10

We present high quality spectroscopic data for two massive stars in the OB10 association of M31, OB10–64 (B0 Ia) and OB10-WR1 (WC6). Medium resolution spectra of both stars were obtained using the ISIS spectrograph on the William Hershel Telescope. This is supplemented with HST-STIS UV spectroscopy and Keck I HIRES data for OB10–64. A non-LTE model atmosphere and abundance analysis for OB10–64 ...

The wind momentum-luminosity relationship of galactic A- and B-supergiants

The Balmer lines of four A Ia-supergiants (spectral type A0 to A3) and fourteen B Ia and Ib-supergiants (spectral type B0 to B3) in the solar neighbourhood are analyzed by means of NLTE unified model atmospheres to determine the properties of their stellar winds, in particular their wind momenta. As in previous work for O-stars (Puls et al. 1996) a tight relationship between stellar wind moment...

The ultraviolet and optical spectra of luminous B-type stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud

We present ultraviolet spectra from the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) of 12 early B-type stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), comprising 9 supergiants and 3 giants. A morphological comparison with Galactic analogues is made using archival data from the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE). In general, the intensity of the P Cygni emission in the UV resonance lines is gre...

Quantitative Studies of the Far-UV, UV and Optical Spectra of Late O and Early B-type Supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds

We present quantitative studies of 8 late O and early B-type supergiants in the Magellanic Clouds using far-ultraviolet FUSE, ultraviolet IUE/HST and optical VLT-UVES spectroscopy. Temperatures, mass-loss rates and CNO abundances are obtained using the non-LTE, spherical, line-blanketed model atmosphere code of Hillier & Miller (1998). We support recent results for lower temperatures of OB-type...
